As Ramadan draws to a close, there is one final obligation that must not be forgotten.
Zakat al-Fitr is not an optional charity.
It is a responsibility of every household, to be performed before the Eid prayer, so that no family is left behind on the day of celebration.
The Prophet ﷺ instructed that it be given as:
“A purification for the fasting person from idle talk and shortcomings, and food for the poor.”
(Abu Dawud)
It purifies what may have fallen short in our fasting.
And it ensures every household can welcome Eid with dignity.
Why Zakat al-Fitr Matters
Eid should not arrive with anxiety. For some families across Aotearoa, Eid can mean:
- Worry about food on the table
- Empty cupboards
- Children notice what others have
Your Zakat al-Fitr changes that – immediately. It provides food and essentials in time for Eid, so families can celebrate without hardship or embarrassment. Practical relief is delivered at the exact moment it is needed.
Delivered Before Eid Prayer
Zakat al-Fitr must be distributed before Eid prayer.
When given on time, it fulfils its purpose.
When delayed, it becomes ordinary charity.
Through the New Zealand Zakat Foundation, your Fitr is:
- Assessed and distributed locally through trusted community partners
- Delivered with dignity and confidentiality
- Shariah-compliant and handled as an amanah
For those who wish, Fitr can also be directed internationally through our trusted partner, ensuring families across the wider Ummah are supported with the same care.
How Much is Zakat al-Fitr?
The amount for 2026 is set at $15 per person. Zakat al-Fitr is payable on behalf of:
- Yourself
- Your spouse
- Your children
- Anyone financially dependent on you
The amount is calculated per person and is updated annually based on staple food value.
