Financial Hardship

Helping Families Through Difficult Times

Financial hardship can affect anyone.

A job loss, illness, relationship breakdown or unexpected expense can quickly leave a family struggling to cover the basics. For many, asking for help is one of the hardest things they’ll ever do.

Through the New Zealand Zakat Foundation, your Zakat and Sadaqah provide timely support to Muslims experiencing genuine financial hardship, helping them regain stability while preserving their dignity.

What We Support

Financial assistance may include:

  • Rent and emergency accommodation
  • Electricity, gas and other essential household bills
  • Groceries and everyday living expenses
  • Medical costs and essential transport
  • Other urgent needs assessed on a case-by-case basis

Every application is carefully assessed to ensure support reaches those who need it most.

Who We Help

The Financial Hardship Fund supports a wide range of people across Aotearoa, including:

  • Families experiencing unexpected financial crisis
  • New Muslims without family support
  • Widows and single parents
  • Individuals unable to meet basic living costs
  • People rebuilding after illness, unemployment or other hardship

Where appropriate, applicants may also be referred to one of our specialised programs, including Debt Relief, Convert Care, Domestic Violence Support or Scholarships.

Why It Matters

Financial hardship is about more than money.

It affects health, relationships and peace of mind. A small amount of support at the right time can prevent a family from falling further into crisis and provide the stability they need to move forward.

This is the purpose of Zakat: to relieve hardship, preserve dignity and strengthen our community.
